Kuranda is a "must see" on any trip to the Cairns region of Queensland, Australia. Try these two fantastic ways to experience the Kuranda, the Steam Railway and the gondola.
village of Kuranda is a picturesque mountain retreat located 25 km northwest of Cairns. You can get there by road, but the best way for the historic Scenic Railway and Skyrail cable car noise. I personally would recommend going to the Kuranda Railway and return by gondola over the rainforest World Heritage Site.
You can join a station in Cairns or slatkovodne.Stanica at Freshwater is very old fashioned and is worth a little time, plus you get the thrill of waiting for the train to get from Cairns. All seats are assigned before the trip, but my advice is to try and get a place on the right side of the train. You will see the view from the train better.
the way to Kuranda takes about one hour 45 minutes from Cairns. It is very spectacular and it will pass the steep ravines, see the amazing waterfalls and walk through the jungle. You will travel through 15 tunnels and over 37 bridges in what must have been an amazing piece of engineering back in the late 1800's. There is a photo stop when Barron Falls are reached. If you do this time after a heavy rain, then your time will be rewarded.
Kuranda Station is beautiful and it is filled with exotic tropical plants. You have to walk uphill to the village of Kuranda. There are numerous shops, markets and restaurants to make you busy. Aboriginal handicrafts and artifacts are abundant. Kuranda no offers many nature based tourist attractions which include koalas, butterflies, native birds, reptiles and kangaroos. You'll be well rewarded by taking a trip on the Riverboat down the Barron River.
When you've had enough time in Kuranda village, then you can return the 7.5 km cable car that takes you through World Heritage rainforest. Each Gondola takes six passengers, but also try to get back in time when you can have one to yourself. You glide through the rainforest and you have a spectacular uninterrupted views of the lush Cairns Highlands, Tropical Cairns and the Coral Sea. You see the rainforest from a unique angle as you travel along the cableway.
There are two places to stop along the route so use them to discover more about the rainforest. You are in an extremely competitive environment in which the struggle for light is important. It is fascinating to walk the boardwalks and visit the Rainforest Interpretive Centre where you can learn a lot about this fascinating environment. At the first stop you can walk to VIDIKOVAC Barron Falls.
pointed out to me a breathtaking view of the Cairns region, when the gondola reaches the point that the descent to Caravonica terminal. You can see for miles in all directions. Port Douglas in the distance and the upmarket Palm Cove can be detected.
When you reach the terminal is a mini bus to take you back to the freshwater station. This is an unforgettable day out, if these two fantastic ways to experience the Kuranda.
