I received an e-mail yesterday from an old acquaintance, friend, Sarah. It was a letter telling me all about how wonderful her life was in the past year. a real adventure, mythical hero journey filled with romance and castles, only without the wicked witch or evil.
I admit, as I read her letter, I began to compare my life to hers. I missed my final. I felt like someone hit me in the gut and said, "Hey, loser. You're wasting your life away." Lucky for me, my very close friend of Cathleen quickly intervened. "Sarah's life is better than yours or mine, it's just a great story teller. I'm sure she has a problem as we do, only she just left those out ."
Then I wondered, what if I told the story of his life in the past year in the same way that Sarah told her? What should my story be?
So I grabbed a cup of blackberry tea, and sat with my laptop and began typing. My story turned out to be more than a classic adventure story. There is a big dream of calling me back, and the risks that simply had to take. My version also had a dragon and the wicked witch that I had to battle. In addition, it was visions of debt and meeting with mentors to guide me. I must admit, this new telling stories about his past year leaves me feeling excited about my own life, proud of what I did and I survived, and even left me looking forward to my future adventures. This is very different perspectives on the same events that have discouraged me before. I did not change events, I only changed the story I told about them.
and I realized it was a fantastic tool to examine your perspective on your own life - to move from feelings of victims and out-of-control - to see themselves as the hero, another there will be an inspiring and courageous and safe. Sarah has developed the skills to re-write his own story in a way to fuel her confidence, and makes her a strong, successful. All brain research, the psychological study over time, show that what we say about ourselves, it is important. This form of storytelling that Sarah has developed, and it would benefit me as well. It is a skill I, too, can learn. As with any other skill, it just needs practice and time.
What is the area of your life you feel particularly discouraged about? If you were to re-write your story, it will be? I challenge you to write your story of your life over the past weeks, months or maybe a year. And tell me what you have discovered on the road. Even better, share your story with others on my website.
